Causes of cerebral palsy

Condition similar to cerebral palsy can occur in any age if infectious diseases, stroke or skull trauma are observed. In children cerebral palsy is caused due to brain trauma or birth trauma during labor and delivery, and complications in the perinatal period or during childhood. On a frequent basis, an accurate cause is not identifiable.

Typical causes include problems in intrauterine development (e.g. exposure to radiation, infection), incomplete pregnancy, asphyxia before birth, hypoxia of the brain, toxicosis, incompliance of mother’s and child’s Rh blood group.

The risk of cerebral palsy development in premature infants is high. In post-labor period, a cause of brain trauma can be skull trauma or infection (e.g. meningitis).
